1. Award Announcements
Aleecha Jones, 17, of Bedford County who made a coat and a suit of 100% wool in her 4-H textile science project received the top honors in the National Make it Yourself with Wool Contest!! Aleecha is also a student (specializing in fashion illustration) at the Mary B. Wheeler School of Design in Martinsburg, PA. We are extremely proud of her accomplishments.
Martha Gregory, was selected as the recipient of the 4-H Family and Consumer Science Award this year! Her program was based on a Bread Making 101 program that was conducted in collaboration with King Arthur Flour Company that reached 1,103 young people. Martha will receive a porcelain statue at state-wide event. Wanda Braymer and Helaine Brown completed the 4-H Family Living Challenge. They each will receive a silver family necklace at a state-wide event. Congratulations to each of the winners!
More information on the awards is located at the 4-H family and consumer education Website at: http://AgExtEd.cas.psu.edu/FCS/4hfl/jsmenu.html and was written up in past association newsletters and e-mails.
2. Upcoming Events
Inservices on the Ids of March!
Things are shaping up for the upcoming inservice workshops related to 4-H Family and Consumer Science starting at 8 AM on Thursday, March 15, followed by the Babysitting Project Inservice at 11:00 AM. Feel free to wander in and out if you want at the 4-H FCS session. More of the general organizational information will be provided early in the session so it is o.k. to come late.
4-H Foods and Nutrition Contest Meeting
Those involved with the foods and nutrition contest this year will be meeting at noon on March 15 at the Penn Stater restaurant. Get in the line as soon as you can! A table has been secured for us so be sure to inquire at the desk. Bring your contest ideas and suggestions. We will need to finalize the schedule! If there is anything the agents should have to study in addition to the project books -- this is the time to bring it. It should be something that agents will have easy access to or that is easy to photocopy or put on the web. Lynn James will be there to chair the meeting. I will be there when I can get my inservice gear rounded up from the morning sessions. Thanks!
State Fashion Revue Meeting
The state fashion revue meeting is April 4, starting at 10:00 AM in 323 C. Please have at least one -- two if possible from your extension region. The contest is really a lot of fun when we have a lot of agents working. Leaders can participate, too, but they must attend this meeting and follow through at the contest. This is one contest that everyone must work together from the start to maximize outcomes! The State Fashion Revue last year was really special last year! Lunch will be provided!
Summer School Class
It looks like I will be teaching a one-week, one credit summer school class on curriculum development. The class will be held in the morning of July 2-6, and a vacation day of July 4 -- 4 days. See me for more details.
3. Project News
Rent Event New Release
We are sending a news release out this week about the 4-H Rent Event project. Double check your shelves and make sure you have some copies in stock in case someone calls.
New Fashion Revue Guide
The new Fashion Revue Guide is in the mail room now. The order number is JO321A. This guide will be inserviced on March 15. Please order just enough for your members and leaders and a few extra. The guide should be given only once to 4-H members and leaders. They will use it during their entire 4-H career (unless, of course, it is revised!). The guide, which can be used as a project and/or a resource depending on your counties' preference includes information on modeling, grooming, accessories, scoring practice, preparation checklist and a game that ties all the information together. The guide is designed for both boys and girls and includes information on how to accommodate for disabilities and emergencies. I hope your 4-H members and leaders find this a useful resource.
We are still sorting out the results of the publication printing proposals approved by Blannie Bowen and Marilyn Corbin. More on this next month.
County Spinning Project
Does someone have a county spinning project? If you do, could you send Jeanette Salter (8 West Fifth Street, Emporium, PA 15834) and me a copy? Thanks!
4. EvaluationsYikes! I received only seven program evaluations since last December! Won't you please take 5 minutes today and complete a review form of 2000? They are important to the program overall. Also, please if you do rate something low, please explain. Comments are helpful! I have enclosed the form again after the references. I will also have it available during my inservice if you wish to complete it or turn it in there. All responses are anonymous. Send the form (cut and paste) e-mail or by mail into Brenda Holcomb (bqh6@psu.edu) --or 323 Ag Admin, UP. It is totally anonymous if you send it to Brenda!
5. 4-H Opportunities EntriesAgents often ask me for the entry options for upcoming farm show so they can adjust their county and regional fair and round-up exhibits. I am compiling the results from the faculty and from the Family Living superintendent right now which takes awhile to do. Unfortunately, the "final" summary won't be available until after May 3. But, if you do need this information before this date I will try to provide it to you.
6. Great ResourcesIn the University AV catalog is a 6-minute animated film, Lady Fishbourne's Complete Guide to Table Manners. It was developed by the Canadian Film Board and I understand at one time received an academy award. In any case, it is one way of teaching table manners to youth in a fun way. Order it from AV services at 800-826-0132. The order number is 12348.VH. Be sure to tell them you are an extension office and part of the university as there is a charge for those outside.
Some of the 4-H textile and clothing leaders are asking about the Creative Kindness book by Nancy Zieman and Gail Brown that gives any number of projects young people can make to assist their communities which can be made in a few hours or less. The book is around $20.00. Country Woman Magazine is currently offering a $5.00 discount and you may be able to order it from local bookstores at a reduced rate. Also, call your local library and see if you can loan or interlibrary loan and copy.
I have noticed that several drug stores are having half price sales on sewing supplies and brand name first aid items. Check local ads for offerings that may help a club get started with a textile science and babysitting projects.
Don't forget the Team Nutrition inservice and Hermie (Rent Event) videos are still available but they are going fast. I hope to have some of these at the inservice, too.
7. Great ReferencesThe following is a list of new resources for the next month. Please send by e-mail and indicate REFERENCES under the subject heading so they are easy to locate when we pull them off. Also,
include the entire references as we have to locate them! Order up to 10 articles, 1 copy each.

8. 4-H FCS Program Evaluation FormOnce a year, I try to evaluate the program offerings. This evaluation was included in the newsletter at the first of the year. Only 7 people responded!!! Please answer the following questions about 4-H family and consumer sciences programs conducted last year (2000). Answer as follows and provide as many comments as possible, especially in areas that you rank low. You can complete this as an individual or during a meeting and send in a consensus ballot -- just let us know how many people participated! Cut and paste and sent to Brenda Holcomb (bqh6@psu.edu). THANKS!
