- Summer is hectic! Here are many of the pertinent items that agents and program assistants ask. I have also included information on the 2002 Farm Show fair premium listings.
If you do have a program assistant work for you who will be trying to obtain information, please pass this newsletter along to them. Also, it helps greatly if they introduce themselves (full name and county) in any e-mail correspondence! The only dates I have scheduled out this summer are between June 17 and June 26--maybe June 28. While I likely will likely be teaching a summer school class the first week in July (the possibility depends upon enrollment)--in any case--I will be here to answer e-mail questions!
Look to your fall and spring 2002 calendars and request any leader inservices or agent meetings as soon as you can. My calendar is getting full already! If possible, try to coordinate events with several counties if possible so I can best use my travel funds! Also, if you are a new agent and want some extra help, please arrange an office visit sometime when you are at the university. I would be happy to help you! Have a great summer! Jan Scholl
- What do You Think?
I already have a number of leaders who sent me e-mails? What do you think about having an e-mail 4-H family and consumer science newsletter for leaders? We could start this this fall if I receive enough requests for it. Let me know.
We are still looking for News and Views journals for the Pattee Library collection. Please let me know if you have any additional copies. Thanks!
There were several questions and requests for helping agents do more and more interesting programs in the 4-H family and consumer sciences area! Let's get some ideas put up. I will scan the 4-H Y2K program excellence reports and write abstracts of the 4-H Family and Consumer Science Awards. Send me your ideas, too!
- Update on Curriculum
In May, the Curriculum Task Force meets to update the curriculum development process so watch for minutes from Claudia Mincemoyer and Patti Fantaske. I will do my best to update you on what will be happening in the fall newsletter when printing proposals will be solicited for the upcoming year. There was some misunderstanding about the status of some of the projects based on the articles that went out in the ATS and Alumni Letter. Many thought the projects were already developed. Hopefully, the following will clarify the status of the projects in the family and consumer science area.
If you'd like to join a curriculum committee, please let me know!
Fashion Revue
The fashion revue publication has been very popular. If you have NOT ordered copies for this summer PLEASE DO SO TODAY!
We have received an overwhelming interest in our fashion revue publications from other states--without even advertising them! But you are our first priority! Please request an order no later than May 14 to cover you through the summer.
In the future, we hope to set up a policy where out-of-state orders will come in at a certain time so as not to disrupt our needs here. The timely nature of the publication makes it difficult to do this currently but we are doing the best we can. Thanks for your help and patience!
Microwave
I am really trying to get the final touches on the advanced microwave project so that it can be published. Let me know if there are any leaders who would like to read through the copy and try a recipe or two. Watch for notices regarding when it will be put on my home page: http://aee.cas.psu.edu/FCS/4hfl/jsmenu.html
International Breads
The publication is now on my home page as Cultural Breads under the "Curriculum" Section and "Projects Under Construction". Please review it and encourage your leaders to review it as well. We received only one international bread recipe so far. If you have one to share, please send soon! If you or your leaders want to comment, please do so by July 27. This should give you a chance to get this notice into your newsletters.
Outdoor Cookery
Oregon is producing an outdoor cookery book that we are interested in purchasing. I will be sending copies to the foods and nutrition committee, but would like to know if there are others interested in pilot testing/reviewing the project. (It is a pretty large book requiring a lot of copying, so please let me know no later than May 18 if you would like a copy. Also, when you receive a copy, know that I will expect a review!!!) Comments are due by July 1 as we need to respond to Oregon on time. I would like to get feedback on the content as well as "go ahead" to purchase this curriculum. Thanks!
Also note the food pyramid puzzle that has been developed (see the EFNEP section below) ! You might want to use it at your 4-H camps. I can provide a camera-ready copy of this draft copy if you'll send back your comments!
Generation Celebration
Matt Kaplan, Lydia Handhart and I are revising the Generation Celebration project manual. It will be on the web site very soon for your comments and also sent to the intergenerational committee. Watch for notices as to when it will be put on my home page or check "Projects Under Construction" under the "Curriculum" section.
Sewing Project Sheets
We have a limited budget and are still trying to decide whether to provide web publications or copies from Coats and Clarks of their sewing projects. What concerns me is that the old sewing project sheets were sent to counties several years ago as "camera ready copy". Look carefully for these sheets and if you don't have them, please let me know. I have only heard from a handful of people as to whether to provide the web/printed project or to purchase from Coats and Clarks. Please let me know your preference if you have one! Thanks for your help!
Cross-stitch Project
I have seen requests for a cross-stitch project. Let me know what is needed. Hopefully in the meantime, youth will use the Stitch by Stitch project with a resource book. I do have some older county projects that other counties have developed.\
Rent Event Game
We haven't progressed much on the Rent Event game except that we have sent in some proposals and are still looking for donors. It seems many of you are interested in several copies of the game. Please let me know if you can think of a donor that might sponsor at least the printing of this game.
EFNEP Curriculum
We are having agents and NEAs review a curriculum that uses the green program sheets we already have in the mailroom. Supervising agents will review this curriculum on May 17. I have also developed a new food pyramid puzzle for use with EFNEP. If you would like a copy to review, please let me know!
- Upcoming Contests
Fashion Revue
Here are a dozen answers related to specific questions agents often pose about state fashion revue. Be sure to read the contest rules in the Achievement Days guide and to check with me if you have comments or concerns. We have also just put a new participant form on the web so it can be printed off and copied on one page back-to-back. The Theme is: Garden of Fashion.
- All county and regional materials are on my home page. Look under "Contests" and "Fashion Revue".
- Participants may come for the one day, July 27, but they must attend all day 7:30 to 10 PM. Also, counties must assume all liability, meal arrangements and health forms (talk to Phil) for those fashion revue participants who come just for the day. 4-H members need to make arrangements to meet parents/drivers at 3:00 PM if they are being picked up.
- The deadline for fashion revue forms from regional is July 3. Phil needs the all names by this date. Form 1 and all the participant forms (sent by the regional revue) chair ABSOLUTELY MUST ARRIVE BY 5 PM to Jan Scholl on July 6. All forms must be complete with photograph, narration and swatches. If you leave town, make sure your secretary has a set. DO NOT SEND OVERNIGHT MAIL!
- Quotas for each region are on the home page. They have changed from last year!
- The deadline for regional ribbon orders was May 1. If you didn't order ribbons but do want a set of score sheets, please contact me.
- We do not solicit volunteer leaders to help with the state fashion revue after April 5 as they need to be a member of the committee (and trained before the revue). Parents and well-wishes may attend the evening revue, but may not participate during the day.
- 4-H member may bring their garments Tuesday night, BEFORE the first night performance from 7-8 PM only. The dressing room will be locked before and after this time.
- We ask that counties sit together the night of the revue and take your seats before the revue starts. We close the doors right at eight.
- The State Revue score sheets are mailed to the agents after Achievement Days and not provided with the other score sheets after the contest. This is best since agents need to explain comments.
- No scores are included on the score sheets when they return to the member. We can only put one or two comments on the sheets with the limited time we have available for judging.
- Photographs of the members may be taken after the revue on the stage. No photos during the revue it is a safety hazard for participants and because the photos just do not come out.
- We have received word that the donors have relinquished their support of the national revue so we will announce only the top ten winners this year.
Textile Science and Foods Contests
4-H Members have been asked to study their project books in preparation for the contest this year. There will be no additional materials mailed out though there are some loan copies of the textile science contest. Check with Jan Scholl for scheduling. Sample quiz bowl questions and committee minutes (topics covered in the contests) are on my home page. Please let 4-H member know that the sample questions will not be the actual questions--though similar. Thanks!
Chair of the Foods and Nutrition Committee: Lynn James
Chair of the Textile Science Committee: Carole ToubakarisThe Farm Show Premium List
The Farm Show Premium Listing for 2002 4-H Family Living and 4-H Opportunities is now on my home page. There were three additions made to the electricity project (class 168) an addition of plant/animal science to Class 184 and the school enrichment option was removed from class 183 (large animals) and added to class 182 (small animals). There will be a lot of celebration at Farm Show for the 100th Year of 4-H. Please encourage your 4-H member to participate in the farm show with entries! Last year, several agents had the mistaken impression that exhibits do not count toward POWs. They are in every single 4-H POW! We depend on exhibits coming in to keep the exhibits each year--we have to defend them. Also, please volunteer yourself and leaders for set up and--especially--the take down of exhibits. It is only a few hours and is really very fun! Contact Jan Scholl, Darlene Resh, Mary Jo Kraft or Ellen Brubaker for more information. Thanks for your consideration! Farm Show change inputs for 2003 are due January 31, 2002.
- References
All the references from the last newsletter were mailed out last week. Thanks to those of you who order: 1) 10 or less single articles, 2) provide the entire line or mark an X those items you want, 3) refer to your order as "references" in the subject line, 4) send your request by e-mail! Here are references for the summer!

Resources
A free handbook: What do you need to know about date (teen dating) violence is available. Contact 800-449-STOP.
Need some quick textile information? There is now a free on-line fiber information resource: www.fiberworld.com. Several universities endorse this resource. The web site includes materials for classrooms, term translators (when clothing is produced in another country), resource links, reference book suggestions, weekly questions and answers, a search site and much, much more. Check it out!
We are attempting to get another copy of the video Lady Fishbourne's Guide to Etiquette that could be shown to youth groups. The only copy now is at the University AV Library and it is popular. Another resource has come to my attention in this area: Kathleen Crilly School of Etiquette, R.D. 1 Box 268, Alexandria PA 16611 (814) 669-9469 etituqette@pennswoods.net. She travels to places in Pennsylvania giving etiquette talks for children, teens and young adults and can customize a presentation to your needs. Contact her about cost information.
I was sorry to miss the workshop, HOSE PLAY at the Pennsylvania Leadership conference. If anyone hears that the speaker will be presenting again, please let me know. Thanks! Have a grand summer!
