PA 4-H Basic Sewing Library

Basic References for PA 4-H Textile Science Projects

Many agents have asked me about basic references to be used with the textile science projects. References for each of the textile science projects are on PENpages 29503231 (the overall list) and for beginners (29503251), intermediates (29503252), advanced (29503253), creative (29503254), and textile arts (knitting, crocheting, weaving--29503255).

If you are on a limited budget and want a basic reference, here are my suggestions:

  1. Let's Sew by Nancy Zieman
    -------------------------------------
This a good all around sewing book for all ages and was designed for use in 4-H programs. It can be ordered through the National 4-H Catalog or through Nancy's Notion's Catalog. It can also be ordered in bulk (141+ copies) at a reduced rate in the neighborhood of $4.00-$5.00 each plus postage.

    Nancy's Notions: 1-800-833-0690
    333 Beichl Avenue
    PO Box 683
    Beaver Dam, WI 53916-0683

Note: If enough PA counties go together at one time, the Department would consider purchasing a quantity in bulk.

  2. Simplicity's Simply the Best Sewing Book
    -------------------------------------
Is another good overall sewing book. As an added plus it includes information about serger applications. It is available for $10.00 each plus shipping from Simplicity in their teacher education packet that is sent in the fall and the spring. If you do not normally receive this packet, request one from:

    Simplicity Pattern Company
    Education Division
    901 Wayne Street
    Niles, MI 49121-0099

  3. Sew Fun by Sewing Fashion Council
    --------------------------------------
Is a pamphlet that includes sewing terms and projects that would be good choices for the Sew Much More and others: pillow, totebag, windsockk, tic tac toe board (sewing for other projects project), ribbon friendship bracelet, and holiday decorating. Cost is approximately $2.00. (When asking the council about this publication indicate that it is for 4-H and the number you would need. They may be willing to donate these to you or offer a reduced rate.)

  4. Sewing By Hand by Christine Hoffman
    -------------------------------------
A really good hand sewing book. $14.00
    (Order through local book store.)

  5. I'll Teach Myself Series by Nancy Smith and Lynda Milligan
    -------------------------------------
    Titles:

This is also an excellent series for beginners, though the books are aproximately $16.00 each. We do have an educational order form which would process these books at half cost, but we would like the counties to get together so a fairly large order can be sent to the company.

  6. Palmer/Pletsch Books for Children by Winky Cherry
    -------------------------------------
    Titles:

(There are others. $10.95 to $12.95 each. May be discounted at some bookstores or at sewing conferences.) May be ordered through local bookstores.

There are many good sources of information for children. These are just some of the more current and popular titles that leaders can choose and use and many are so inexpensive they can be owned personally by the 4-H members themselves.
